Abstract

In this interview, conducted in 1992 and originally published in 1995, Edward Dmytryk examines his career and his conception of the cinema, paying special attention to his beginnings in the 1940s and his work at RKO. Throughout it, he talks about aspects as varied and enlightening (for his work and for the classical Hollywood cinema) as the studio system, the role of filmmakers in it, the star system, the transformations in cinema after the Second World War, the concept of realism, the influence of psychoanalysis, technical advances, style and authorship, the impact of foreign films, the film noir, pictorial references in photography, Citizen Kane, anti-Semitism, violence, social messages or his sad experience during the HUAC period.
