Constructive typology of cinematographic space

Abstract

In any discipline it is essential to define and classify concepts, establishing typologies based on a theoretical corpus in order to clarify the praxis. In this respect, cinematographic space can be classified in various ways. This article proposes a new typology, taking into account the construction of the space itself. Firstly, in pro-filmic terms, and then in filmic terms, which are further broken down into formal and functional. Within the formal category (according to the three delimited spaces: the real space, the space of the film shoot and the space of the screen), five different types can be identified: authentic, recreated, reproduced, modified and invented. In the functional category I posit four subcategories, which depend on the place and the use made of it: existent, imagined, reconstructed and nonexistent.
