Resum

Per tal d'il·lustrar que el treball actoral mereix la mateixa atenció que se li dona a altres elements fílmics, el present article demostra que actuar pot ser crucial fins i tot per al cinema independent d'autor. L'anàlisi se centra en les interpretacions dels personatges de Matewan (John Sayles, 1987), pel·lícula que pertany a la primera «edat d'or» del cinema independent americà i està realitzada per un director reconegut del cinema independent. Explora la concepció neonaturalista del personatge en la qual es basen les actuacions en Matewan. També analitza aspectes dels actes, identificats pels teòrics de l'Escola de Praga com a signes gestuals (gestos socials) i expressions gestuals (ús individual dels gestos), per demostrar que, en Matewan, la informació clau sobre els personatges i el seu món es transmet a través dels signes gestuals seleccionats i de les qualitats de les expressions gestuals idiosincràtiques de cada actor.
