Abstract

This paper analyses the political function that underlies Enrique Urbizu’s film practice, taking as an example his newest film, No habrá paz para los malvados (2011). The issue is tackled from a discursive point of view, dealing with the system of meanings articulated by the mise en scène, the genre typology, and the thematic space. All this produces a narrative proposal that invites us to think the polis adressing us, not as mere spectators, but fundamentally as citizens. Through a cinematographic style defined by the naked presentation of facts, Urbizu carries out a dialogue between two traditional genres, film noir and the western, confronting us with the shadow projected by our own image in the mirror of the global capitalist society.
